Rights activists flay NHRC's
inaction
April 4,
About a dozen human rights organizations today
flayed the National Human Rights Commission for not using its
authority to investigate the Kapilvastu incident where dozens
of people lost their lives and property in a series of violent
clashes between the State, the Maoists and the Maoists-resistance
groups in February.
A press statement issued by the rights organizations
said that the local people had appraised the NHRC's fact-finding
team about violent activities from both the warring sides.
"It is said to note that the NHRC has
simply recommended the government to investigate the incidents
instead of using its own authority." the statement said.
Presenting its report on April 1, the NHRC
had recommended the government to take necessary action against
those responsible for the incidents.
Rights activists said the NHRC's latests move
has tarnished the body's image. It may be recalled that the
tenure of the commission is going to expire in two months.
